Anyone looking for Iris Brendel at 2am over the last 40 years would have been likely to find her in her pottery workshop in Beatrixgasse, Vienna. Her nocturnal existence and limited need for sleep lent themselves well to her full-time hobby of forming interesting and unusual creations out of clay. Tirelessly experimenting with glazes, shapes and ideas, she developed a series of recognizable ranges over her career. Early works include interestingly shaped vases, most typically animal inspired, including large cat vases and the humorous Roemertopfs (a roasting pot for the oven). Her Reliefs also a theme throughout her career, culminating in the Fountain of Youth and Water series. Iris's most remarkable work appeared in the last 10-15 years of her working life with the extraordinary series of large Caricatures completed shortly before she was diagnosed with cancer. As all artists know, recognition is generally received posthumously, and with her works now featured in museums - I know Iris would be very proud. |
